That was one of the world\u2019s most visionary tech-sector leaders, Nvidia
\n NVDA,
\n -1.70%<\/bg-quote>
\n CEO Jensen Huang, who explained that building Nvidia was \u201ca million times harder than I expected it to be\u201d as he theorized that \u201cnobody in their right mind would do it\u201d if they were aware of the true personal toll.<\/p>\n

The Taiwan-born 60-year-old, whose family relocated to Thailand and then the U.S. in his youth and is said to have co-founded Nvidia in 1993 following a meeting at a Denny\u2019s restaurant in San Jose, Calif., after stints at AMD
\n AMD,
\n -0.58%<\/bg-quote>
\n and LSI Logic, wouldn\u2019t start his own company today, he said, if he were 30 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The tech titan, however, posited in a recent interview with the podcast Acquired that a \u201csuperpower\u201d among entrepreneurs is the ability to trick themselves into believing \u201cit\u2019s not that hard.\u201d <\/p>\n

Huang said that his biggest fear remains, as it has been since Nvidia\u2019s early days, is failing to facilitate success among workers.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m afraid of the same things today that I was in the very beginning of this company, which is letting the employees down.\u201d <\/p>\n

Huang, who according to FactSet owns a 3.5% stake in Nvidia (market cap: $1.04 trillion), explained in the podcast interview that workers joining a company end up believing in its vision and taking on its aspirations as their own.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a lot of people who joined your company because they believe in your hopes and dreams, and they\u2019ve adopted it as their hopes and dreams,\u201d Huang said.\u00a0\u201cYou want to be right for them. You want to be successful for them. You want them to be able to build a great life. \u2026 The greatest fear is that you let them down.\u201d<\/p>\n

In explaining how he persevered, despite doubts and challenges, in building Nvidia into the company it is today, Huang credited a \u201csupport network\u201d of people who never gave up on him during the three-decade journey.<\/p>\n

He explained that the experience of leading Nvidia during those periods when its share price has been in seeming free fall was almost \u201ctoo much to endure,\u201d after the company was first listed on public markets in 1999. \u201cIt\u2019s embarrassing no matter how you think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments come as Nvidia\u2019s share price has, again, been in retreat, losing ground following a major 245% surge over the previous 12 months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More recently, the Santa Clara\u2013based company\u2019s stock was hit by the Biden administration\u2019s decision to introduce tougher controls on the export of semiconductors to China.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Huang said developments in artificial intelligence now pose an \u201cenormous\u201d opportunity for companies like Nvidia. \u201cThe market opportunity has grown by probably a thousand times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said AI will \u201ccreate more jobs\u201d in the near term, but he also warned that the creation of those jobs doesn\u2019t mean certain other jobs will not be lost to automation.\u00a0\u201cIf you become more productive and the company becomes more profitable, usually they hire more people to expand into new areas,\u201d Huang said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, obviously, net generation of jobs doesn\u2019t guarantee that any one human doesn\u2019t get fired. That\u2019s obviously true. It\u2019s more likely that someone will lose a job to someone else, some other human that uses an AI,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He advised people to \u201clearn how to use AI\u201d as he argued that \u201cjobs will change.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As to Nvidia itself, Huang explained, the company \u2014 in a reflection of the products it sells \u2014 is structured like a \u201ccomputing stack.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said \u201cNvidia\u2019s not built like a military\u201d with a top-down command and control system. Instead, Huang said, the company is organized like a \u201cneural network\u201d with a decentralized structure, reflecting a belief that \u201cyour organization should be the architecture of the machinery of building the product.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
