They each had a background in commercial banking before becoming advisors and officially launched their practice after Van Liew joined Stephans at Merrill Lynch in 2006, gradually becoming one of the larger female-led investment consulting practices in the industry. With 14 members on the team today, they work with a select handful of both private and institutional clients\u2014never more than 50 relationships in total, including some of the largest nonprofits and endowments in the country. \u201cOur team\u2019s hallmark has been to grow our practice in a way that we can continue to provide a high touch and hands-on experience for our clients,\u201d says Stephans. \u201cThe institutional consulting experience also gives us a unique vantage point and approach that really benefits our complex family office clients.\u201d<\/p>\n

Competitive Edge: <\/strong>Van Liew cites her team\u2019s role as an early pioneer in the impact investing field several decades ago as a significant competitive advantage. \u201cWe have a simple goal\u2014trying to help families and large endowments to grow not only their financial capital but also their social capital,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2018ve been fortunate to have a front row seat but also a loud voice as this whole area of specialization has continued to evolve.\u201d The vast majority of the team\u2019s $8 billion in managed assets are invested in a way that aligns with a client’s values or social and environmental priorities. Generating a positive social or environmental impact with client assets may be much more time consuming work and also requires more specialized resources and a truly holistic approach, but it actually creates better performance and downside resilience for clients over the long run, the partners say.<\/p>\n

Investment Philosophy\/Strategy: <\/strong>The team uses a comprehensive investment philosophy that relies on heavily customized programs built from the ground up for each client. \u201cThe goal is to deliver on both ends\u2014achieving financial outcomes but also moving the needle for social and environmental causes clients care about,\u201d says Van Liew. \u201cOur fundamental philosophy is really based around an endowment model that embraces strategic asset allocation first and foremost with an emphasis on broad diversification.\u201d For some wealthy clients, that may mean public investments, while for institutions, the team may use a variety of complementary private market or alternative investments, for example. The team also doesn\u2019t manage money themselves, instead doing the due diligence to seek out specialist third party managers in every asset class\u2014with over 400 manager meetings last year alone. \u201cFinding these best-in-class third party managers has really helped our clients weather choppy and unpredictable markets,\u201d adds Stephans. \u201cOur priority is to understand and respond to each of our clients’ unique and specific needs in a collaborative and educational spirit that is fully customized and puts the clients at the center.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investment Outlook: <\/strong>Both partners emphasize how important it is to deflect the noise of the moment and stay focused on a long term strategic plan. \u201cWe think the road ahead will remain challenging for a period of time before it gets better,\u201d says Van Liew. \u201cWe do expect rates to stay higher for longer and this is something that the market has not fully digested yet.\u201d The team predicts that volatility won\u2019t go away anytime soon with likely a more muted outlook for public equities over the next several years. \u201cWe are focusing on managers who are quality oriented\u2014manager selection has been our golden ticket,\u201d says Van Liew, while Stephans adds, \u201cit\u2019s important to be nimble and be prepared to navigate continual change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
