All you need to know about the man replacing Sam Altman"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>It&#8217;s been just a few days since Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, was ousted in a shock move \u2014 and his replacement has already been named.<\/p>\n<p>After a weekend of rumor and speculation, Emmett Shear \u2014 former co-founder and CEO of Twitch \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eshear\/status\/1726526112019382275\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed he will take the top job<\/a> at probably the most high-profile AI company in the world.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X early Monday, Shear said he got a call from the company asking him to become interim CEO of the company and that he had accepted, &#8220;after consulting with my family and reflecting on it for just a few hours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It comes after Altman, who led OpenAI through its development of the wildly popular generative artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, left after facing pressure from the board to step down.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons behind his departure are unclear, but some insiders had expressed concern that Altman wasn&#8217;t the right fit for the company. He is involved in another company, the eyeball-scanning tech company Worldcoin, for example, and there were concerns that this may have served as a distraction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Who is Emmett Shear?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Shear is a big name in Silicon Valley \u2014 but to most people, he is unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Shear took Twitch \u2014 the live-streaming site he co-founded with Justin Kan, Michael Seibel, and Kyle Vogt in 2007 \u2014 from originally broadcasting the life of Kan 24\/7, to a worldwide phenomenon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-105539932\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-105539932\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000048309\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Twitch was acquired by <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\">Amazon<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> for $1 billion in 2014 and Shear stepped down as CEO of Twitch last year.<\/p>\n<p>During his time at the company, he faced tensions from streamers who believed that the platform wasn&#8217;t defending their interests. It found itself locked in a tense battle with rival YouTube for talent, with the latter attracting several high-profile personalities from Twitch with lucrative exclusive broadcasting deals.<\/p>\n<p>After Shear&#8217;s departure from the streaming site, he became a partner at Y Combinator, the startup accelerator. Altman was formerly president of Y Combinator.<\/p>\n<p>Before Shear started Twitch, he was the co-founder of Kiko Calendar, a calendar app he worked on through the 2005 Y Combinator program.<\/p>\n<p>In his post on X Monday, Shear explained why he had taken the OpenAI job.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had recently resigned from my role as CEO of Twitch due to the birth of my now 9 month old son,&#8221; Shear said in the post early Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Spending time with him has been every bit as rewarding as I thought it would be, and I was happily avoiding full time employment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I took this job because I believe that OpenAI is one of the most important companies currently in existence. When the board shared the situation and asked me to take the role, I did not make the decision lightly. Ultimately I felt that I had a duty to help if I could,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Why it matters<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The swift elevation of Shear to OpenAI&#8217;s CEO puts him in charge of one of the most important companies in the AI world today.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI is known for its popular generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful technology behind that chatbot is called a large language model, or LLM.
