Twenty years ago, my husband and I made a decision that would transform our lives.<\/p>\n
I had just quit a government job that had me traveling the world. We had two young children and no clear plan. We gave ourselves six months to figure out our next move.<\/p>\n
What followed was both unnerving and beautiful.<\/p>\n
Each day, Enrique and I would go to the gym, drop the kids off at the free daycare and ride stationary bikes side by side while mapping out our future. That rhythmic hum of the bikes, the kids\u2019 laughter in the background \u2014 it became our strategy HQ.<\/p>\n
Enrique, then finishing his MBA, turned our future into his final project. We evaluated three potential businesses and eventually chose a cleaning franchise that aligned with what mattered most to us: time freedom and financial independence.<\/p>\n

In the early days, \u201ccommunity\u201d didn\u2019t mean networking events or masterminds. I wasn\u2019t ready for all that.<\/p>\n
What I needed were anchors \u2014 one or two people who could keep us steady when everything felt uncertain.<\/p>\n
One was Enrique\u2019s strategy professor, who helped us evaluate business models with clarity. The other was a friend working at the Small Business Development Center \u2014 a free, often-overlooked resource for entrepreneurs. He became a steady guide during those critical early months.<\/p>\n
He had one simple, unwavering rule: \u201cDon\u2019t come see me until your financial statements are done.\u201d His point was clear \u2014 if you don\u2019t know where you stand financially, you\u2019re not running a business.<\/p>\n
Later, when I faced tough employee decisions, he didn\u2019t sugarcoat things. \u201cYes, you need to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019d cry. Then I\u2019d do it. And I\u2019d return stronger. Those tears weren\u2019t weakness \u2014 they were part of becoming who I needed to be.
Because freedom requires facing what scares you most.<\/p>\n
As the business stabilized, I realized I needed more than anchors. I needed peers \u2014 people who understood the weight and wonder of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when I began seeking out entrepreneurial communities. For example, groups like Entrepreneurs\u2019 Organization offer spaces where people live not just big businesses but big integrated lives. It shifted my view of what was possible \u2014 not just professionally but personally.<\/p>\n
I also realized that real entrepreneurial success isn\u2019t about separation \u2014 not work versus<\/i> life \u2014 but integration. You\u2019re not building a business while life happens on the sidelines. You\u2019re weaving it all together.<\/p>\n
The right circles support that. They don\u2019t just celebrate wins \u2014 they hold space for the full journey: the doubts, the pivots, the personal growth.<\/p>\n
A major turning point came when I gave a talk about my entrepreneurial journey.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t just a business story. I talked about surviving abuse. I talked about parenting. I talked about building a company from scratch. For the first time, I brought my full self to the stage.<\/p>\n
What I had once viewed as liabilities \u2014 the hard parts I kept hidden \u2014 were actually my greatest strengths. Owning my full story didn\u2019t diminish my credibility. It deepened it.<\/p>\n
In that moment, I realized: Vulnerability isn\u2019t a liability \u2014 it\u2019s your leverage.<\/p>\n

That experience reshaped how I think about community. The best communities aren\u2019t rigid. They\u2019re more like containers without walls \u2014 strong enough to hold you, yet spacious enough to let you grow.<\/p>\n
Now, my sense of community is more fluid. Every morning, I walk five miles listening to podcasts \u2014 business leaders, spiritual thinkers and health experts. One idea leads to another, one voice leads to a new connection. Mentorship is everywhere if you know how to listen intentionally.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the evolution \u2014 from needing a handful of anchors to building a global network of voices. Proximity matters less now. What matters more is alignment.<\/p>\n
If I could redesign the entrepreneurial community of the future, it would look different than most rooms I\u2019ve walked into.<\/p>\n
We\u2019d break down artificial hierarchies. No more sorting people by revenue tiers or exit size. Instead, we\u2019d gather around shared values \u2014 resilience, generosity, curiosity and purpose.<\/p>\n
We\u2019d see that the entrepreneur with a $1 million business could teach the billion-dollar founder something they\u2019ve forgotten. And vice versa. Vulnerability would become currency. Wisdom would flow in all directions.<\/p>\n
Those exercise bike sessions twenty years ago were the foundation of something much bigger than a business.<\/p>\n
They taught me that success isn\u2019t a solo journey. It\u2019s shaped by every mentor, every challenge and every honest conversation that helped me become more of who I truly am.<\/p>\n
We often chase freedom as a destination. But I\u2019ve come to believe this: Freedom doesn\u2019t happen when you escape the hard stuff \u2014 it happens when you embrace it with the right people beside you.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
