But in the age of AI-driven acceleration, that model doesn\u2019t just slow down, it breaks.<\/p>\n<p>When the leader becomes the primary doer or the ultimate reviewer, they inadvertently cap the organization\u2019s potential at the limit of their own bandwidth. So as a result, growth grinds to a halt and is choked by the good intentions of a leader who can\u2019t let go.<\/p>\n<p>Yet escaping this trap requires more than simply learning to delegate. My team was building an internal pricing intelligence tool, an application to scrape competitor data and visualize market gaps by ZIP code. The old version of me would have been immersed in the project, micromanaging every wireframe, dashboard label and tooltip explanation. My fingerprints would have been on every line of code and every pixel of the design.<\/p>\n<p>However, this time, I knew something had to change.<\/p>\n<p>I gave myself one simple, agonizing rule: I was only allowed to act as the end user. My sole function was to test the user interface, not to influence its development. It was excruciating. I watched early deployments roll out with faulty logic, incorrect color schemes and glaring UI mistakes that would have sent my former self into a frenzy of edits and corrections. At one point, I had to physically restrain myself from jumping in to fix things.<\/p>\n<p>But then, two things became clear. First, the prototype reached 80% completion in a matter of days, not the weeks or months it would have taken under my direct supervision. Second, and more importantly, I witnessed my team taking true ownership, which revealed a powerful truth: when you repeatedly edit someone\u2019s work, you are silently stripping them of their autonomy and power. Instead of asking, \u201cIs this perfect?\u201d I started asking, \u201cAre you taking complete ownership of this outcome?\u201d This small shift reframed the goal from flawless execution \u2014 my old standard \u2014 to accountable leadership, the new standard we needed to scale.<\/p>\n<p>From there, I developed a few practical habits. When tempted to jump into the weeds on a project, I instituted a mandatory 24-hour \u201choldback\u201d for myself. I forced myself to wait one day before intervening. Ninety percent of the time, the team solved the problem correctly without my intervention.<\/p>\n<p>I also began using AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude to force abstraction. Instead of sketching out detailed solutions, I\u2019d create high-level conceptual frameworks or basic UX mockups and let the team run with them. My need to control the details evolved into a system for accelerating their process.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why most leaders can\u2019t let go<\/h2>\n<p>And this is where I see so many otherwise brilliant leaders stall. They can\u2019t leap because they can\u2019t stop being the best copywriter, analyst or slide designer in the room. The irony is that the higher you climb, the less your value lies in <i>doing<\/i> and the more it lies in <i>scaling the doing of others<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The most common failure mode is a leader who fails to teach their team\u2019s decision-making skills. They create frameworks for review, not for replication. They build systems that require them to be the final checkpoint.<\/p>\n<p>But when your team only knows how to ask for help, they will continually pull you back into the operational mire you\u2019re trying to escape, and you\u2019ll never have the time or space to focus on the next-level strategic work like AI implementation that only you can do.<\/p>\n<article data-scroll-anchor=\"true\" data-testid=\"conversation-turn-2\" data-turn=\"assistant\" data-turn-id=\"cec9ff01-df5b-4795-8a17-97788c79b37d\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>In the end, the hardest lesson I learned while scaling was that my need for control was a professional liability, not a virtue.
