Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser told <i>Fortune<\/i> in a statement on Tuesday that the letter\u2019s claim that the company has put aside its climate goals is \u201ccategorically false and ignores the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon is already committed to powering our operations even more sustainably and investing in carbon-free energy,\u201d Glasser said in a statement. \u201cThis includes supporting two advanced nuclear energy agreements and investing in more than 600 renewable energy projects worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter also highlights Jassy\u2019s remarks earlier this year that AI would cause Amazon\u2019s workforce to shrink \u201cin the next few years.\u201d Jassy encouraged Amazon employees to use AI and participate in training on the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The employees see Jassy\u2019s comments as a statement that the company is \u201cforcing\u201d them to use AI while \u201cinvesting in a future where it\u2019s easier to discard us.\u201d Workers are experiencing higher expectations for output and shorter timelines to complete projects, the letter states.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><b>Apple Conducted Rare Layoffs Focused on One Specific Team<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Amazon laid off 14,000 employees in October, one of the largest job cuts in its history, as it made significant investments in AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>In a third-quarter earnings call, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said that the company had spent $89.9 billion so far this year on its cloud computing business, Amazon Web Services, as well as AI infrastructure like data centers.<\/p>\n<p>The open letter demands employee input in AI adoption. The signatories want Amazon to create working groups of non-managers across the company who will help decide how AI-related layoffs or hiring freezes are implemented.
