I believe it\u2019s important to meet candidates face-to-face \u2014 even if it\u2019s online \u2014 before moving them to the next stage.<\/p>\n<p>Frank was one of the candidates.<\/p>\n<p>About 15 minutes before the interview, he emailed to say he couldn\u2019t get his speakers to work with Zoom and asked if we could do the interview by phone. I told him I couldn\u2019t. I waited for him to suggest another option. He didn\u2019t. When I asked if he had any alternatives, he said no. So I cancelled the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Harsh? I don\u2019t think so. If you freeze over a minor tech glitch, you\u2019re not ready for today\u2019s workplace.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t just about technology. Frank may have had other options \u2014 trying different speakers or earbuds, using another device like his phone or finding another way to connect. The specific solution isn\u2019t the point. The point is that he presented a problem and expected me to solve it. And I hadn\u2019t even met him yet.<\/p>\n<p>Frank made a mistake that many job candidates don\u2019t realize when dealing with managers and business owners. Yes, we value experience, professionalism and positive attitudes. But more than anything, we want people who solve problems, not create them.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t want people who immediately explain why something can\u2019t be done. We don\u2019t want people who throw up their hands when faced with a challenge. We want people who find a way to get things done despite the obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>A technical glitch shouldn\u2019t cost someone a job opportunity \u2014 but the way they respond to it might. If you can\u2019t troubleshoot your own Zoom call, how can I trust you to troubleshoot problems in my office? It doesn\u2019t inspire confidence.<\/p>\n<p>This matters even more in an era of large corporate layoffs and the accelerating rise of AI. Many jobs will change or disappear. Adaptability and problem-solving will only become more important. The most important test in an interview isn\u2019t the r\u00e9sum\u00e9 \u2014 and it isn\u2019t even the interview itself. It\u2019s how you demonstrate that you can solve problems.<\/p>\n<p>Today, employees are asking for more flexibility. They want to work from home, experiment with their own tools, operate independently and take on more responsibility. Smart employers are open to this. They build environments that encourage innovation and ownership. They want employees who embrace technology and find better ways to work.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the kind of environment I want in my small business. Given those expectations, how could I confidently hire Frank?<\/p>\n<p>Preparation matters too. Strong leaders are always thinking ahead, and successful employees do the same. Frank knew this interview was scheduled. He should have tested his speakers in advance and given himself time \u2014days, not minutes \u2014 to fix the problem. If necessary, he could have bought a cheap pair of headphones or arranged an alternative device.<\/p>\n<p>In my business, problems come up constantly. I\u2019m not looking for people who simply react. I\u2019m looking for people who anticipate issues and are ready to deal with them.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll admit that I\u2019m not a great interviewer. I tend to like people and often want to give them a chance. A stronger interviewer might challenge candidates with hypothetical scenarios to see how they respond under pressure.
