Prototypes include sketches, diagrams and fully working tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow everyone is bringing a prototype that they built, which is pretty amazing,\u201d Dorsey said on a recent episode of Sequoia\u2019s Long Strange Trip podcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dorsey, who co-founded Block in 2009, said the prototypes, which employees develop using either simulated or real data, offer \u201cfar greater depth and realism\u201d than any traditional slide deck. He added that they can be updated in real time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-block-recently-underwent-layoffs\">Block recently underwent layoffs<\/h2>\n<p>Last month, Block laid off 40% of its workforce, or about 4,000 employees. Dorsey explicitly framed the layoffs as a consequence of AI-powered \u201cintelligence tools\u201d changing how the company operates, not as a response to financial trouble. He said these tools, combined with \u201csmaller and flatter teams,\u201d are enabling a new way of working that \u201cfundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorsey also said at the time that Block\u2019s \u201cgross profit continues to grow,\u201d arguing the company is acting from a position of strength and predicting that other firms will make similar AI-driven cuts over the next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-ceos-are-also-against-slide-decks\">Other CEOs are also against slide decks<\/h2>\n<p>Dorsey is far from the first CEO to move away from slide decks. In June 2004, Jeff Bezos famously banned PowerPoint presentations at Amazon, arguing in an email to staff that slide decks \u201cgive permission to gloss over ideas, flatten out any sense of relative importance and ignore the interconnectedness of ideas.\u201d He asked staff to write \u201ca good four-page memo\u201d instead, with \u201cwell-structured, narrative text.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of slide decks, the company created the Amazon Six-Pager, which is a detailed memo that outlines the issues and conversations that led to the meeting. Staff members read the six-pager before and come prepared to discuss it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Steve Ballmer criticized slide decks while he was CEO of Microsoft. In 2009, he said that he didn\u2019t think slide decks were \u201cefficient.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost meetings nowadays, you send me the materials and I read them in advance,\u201d he told The New York Times. \u201cAnd I can come in and say: \u2018I\u2019ve got the following four questions.
