If you put your money in the stocks of the S&amp;P 500 benchmark index at the end of 2019, for example, you would have seen an impressive cumulative real return of more than 30% by mid- 2021, according to an analysis last week by researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. But if you bought government bonds\u2014well, not so much. Their value didn\u2019t even keep up with inflation. The chart below shows the period\u2019s stars and duds.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe id=\"mntl-sc-block-iframe__uri_1-0\" class=\"comp lazyload mntl-sc-block-iframe__uri mntl-block\" allow=\"encrypted-media 'src'\" data-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nseaL\/1\/\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" title=\"Cumulative Real Return by Asset Class\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<cite id=\"mntl-sc-block-iframe__caption_1-0\" class=\"comp type--mouse mntl-sc-block-iframe__caption mntl-text-block\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-6\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\nLooking at this performance and the rapid increase in home prices, the strong return on assets makes the 2020 downturn pretty unusual as recessions go, researchers at the St. Louis Fed said.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-8\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n\u201cCompared with the aftermath of previous recessions, returns on assets have not only recovered relatively fast, but also grown significantly,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThis growth has had a positive effect on the wealth of households across the country.\u201d They pointed out, however, that older households, who\u2019ve had more time to accumulate assets, enjoyed greater returns than younger ones just starting out.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-10\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<em>Have a question, comment, or story to share?
