Battle of the Luxuries: Business Class vs. First Class – Which Takes the High-Flying Crown?

When you’re booking a flight, the idea of upgrading to business class or first class if often far more appealing than choosing economy or coach. The premium cabin experience is essentially guaranteed to be more comfortable, and you’ll get access to more included amenities. However, figuring out whether business class or first class is the right choice isn’t easy if you don’t understand how the two stand apart. Here’s what you need to know about business class vs. first class.

What Is Business Class?

Business class is usually available on long distance flights, typically those flying internationally. The experience typically includes some luxury upgrades, including wide seats that may lay flat, a workspace, WiFi included, and expanded or elevated dining services when compared to economy. Beverages – including alcoholic ones – are often included with the price. Seats may also be partially partitioned for extra privacy.

What Is First Class?

For domestic flights, first class typically means having a significantly larger seat than what you find in economy, as well as much more leg room. The seats may also recline further than the economy seats, and you usually get some extra perks, too. For example, food and beverages (including alcoholic drinks) are traditionally included for no additional cost. It’s also common for first class to have its own restroom, so you don’t have to worry about long lines.

International first class is typically considered the pinnacle of flying. Wide, lie-flat seats with privacy dividers are commonly available. Chef-curated menus with a la carte options, hand-selected wine lists, and other elevated meal and drink offerings are usually included. Additionally, you may get perks like pajamas, slippers, and more.

In some cases, international first class involves completely private rooms, and there may even be a smaller seat available in that space that can host a guest. Some flights may have showers or spa services available, as well as classic offerings included, like WiFi.

Are All Business Class and First Class Experiences the Same?

While the descriptions above outline what business class and first class seats can include, the experience can vary from airline to airline and even from one flight to the next. The type of plane and its age may play a role, as well as the route you’re flying. As a result, before booking any tickets, you need to see precisely what you’re getting for your money.

The Differences Between Business Class vs. First Class

Generally, the differences between business class vs. first class depend on whether you’re comparing domestic first class or international first class to business class. Typically, business class is more luxurious than domestic first class, but it’s not as elevated as the international first class experience.

For international options, first class usually comes with more amenities and luxuries than business class. However, first class also costs significantly more. In some cases, a first class international flight may cost two times as much as business class, though other routes may see first class tickets costing six times what you’re paying for business class or more.

Additionally, while many business class seats will lay flat, some merely recline, albeit significantly more than coach. Completely private spaces are also more likely with first class, though business class does offer a notable amount of privacy. Guest seats in private areas are far more likely in first class, too, as well as more flexible dining options, such as a la carte menus with any-time service.

However, as mentioned above, the exact experience does vary. As a result, you need to explore the amenities and perks associated with specific flights to see how any options you’re considering compare to one another.

Which Is Better, First Class or Business Class?

In most cases, international first class is the most luxurious flying experience available. However, it comes with an incredibly high price tag. As a result, while international first class may work well for some, others may prefer business class. After all, business class offers an elevated experience that’s far beyond what you get with coach, and it typically beats the domestic first class experience, too, but for far less than what you’d spend on international first class.

How to Book Business Class or First Class Tickets

If you want to book business class or first class seats for your next flight, you have plenty of options. Essentially, any airline website or booking site can have those options available.

However, since the cost is usually a concern for anyone booking premium cabin seats, it’s wise to use websites or apps that help you get the best deal. CheapOair and Kayak are both excellent options when you want low-cost flights while still capturing the elevated experience offered by business class or first class. Plus, they’re easy to navigate, and you can search for options through a wide variety of airlines, making them excellent destinations for all things air travel.

Do you agree with our assessment of business class vs. first class flying, or do you see the situation differently? Do you think that both business class and first class are worth the cost? Why or why not? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
